“They were called Christians…”

I am a Christian.  As a Christian, one of the main reasons I decided to write this blog is to point out the hypocrisy of many Christians today.  I also chose to write this blog in order to point out the ignorance of many of my friends and acquaintances who make blanket statements about Christians.  Obviously, I can only present my own view on the matter, but my hope is that by presenting a reasonable view of my life and faith as a Christian, maybe some of my readers will change their negative views of Christians in general.

Some of you reading this may think you know what Christians are or what they believe, but there is a lot to Christian belief and faith.  Simply put, a Christian is a person that follows the teachings of Jesus Christ (hence the term Christian).  If a person doesn’t follow Christ’s teachings, I personally feel that they are not a Christian.  A lot of people call themselves Christians, but it doesn’t necessarily make it so.  Even Richard Dawkins, a well-known atheist, called himself a “cultural Christian”.  Apparently, Dawkins was not familiar with what Jesus said about himself, or he probably wouldn’t have wanted to connect himself with Christianity.

Now, I point this out for one important reason.  Most of the “so-called” Christians in the media, the ones that buy in to “Christian culture” because they think it will get them political power or wealth or prestige, are NOT Christians.  They wave the name of Jesus around like a flag, thinking it will get them the worldly things they desire.  But instead, their actions mostly just give decent Christians a bad name.  Jesus himself knew about these kinds of hypocrites and spoke against them.

So to those of you out there that have had bad experiences with Christians, I would firstly like to apologize on their behalf.  Real Christians try not to judge, try not to be hypocrites, and try to love their fellow man.  But real Christians are still human and make mistakes.  So for all the times that I and other well-meaning Christians have failed to follow Jesus in loving you unconditionally, I am truly sorry.

But for all those “so-called” Christians, the hypocrites, there really is no excuse for them.  Honestly, I really wish they would all shut up.  I’m sure you do too. Not all Christians are like them…just the ones that tend to make the most noise.

So that’s the main purpose of this blog.  I just want to make some noise.  I’m writing this to my friends, so that you can hopefully see that not all Christians are like the ones that are Christians in name only.  If I can persuade you of that, then perhaps I can persuade you that Christianity in general is not something to be vilified or reviled, but rather something to be considered as a reasonable way for a person to live their life, even in this modern age.
